What Do All the Attributes Mean?

Pearl Type

All of our pearls are hand-selected real, freshwater pearls made by real oysters. Click anywhere in this area to learn more about the process of freshwater pearl harvesting.

Pearl Size

Every pearl will have a slightly different size, shape and luster. We try hard to be as consistent as possible. Sometimes you'll see a small range such as "7-8mm" We'll select the best pearl for the design which may not always be exactly 7 or 8mm and may even vary from one item to the next (although for earrings for example, we'll always make sure they match :)

Pearl Color

Freshwater pearls come in a variety of colors. White is the most common and our favorite. The more white and lustrous, the higher the price. We try to balance beautiful (real) pearls for the best beauty/price ratio. For example, our Pearl Rope is amazing, but think it's ok for the pearls to be a little off-white to keep the price affordable, yet still have an amazing piece of jewelry.

Pearl Shape

Well.. round is round :) Oval is like a football or may be round with one flat side for mounting, etc. Generally round is more expensive since harder to make (since you can't order an oyster what to do :)

Other Materials

For all other components almost everything is 92.5% pure silver except in some cases that need color accents or we preferred to have a gold look. For any "gold" chains, clasps or accents, it is real gold, but a "micro-layer" that is thin to keep cost down. Over time, this gold will wear off, but still leave you with the underlying 925 silver.

How Does Shalin Price Our Jewelry?

Pricing Factors

Pearl Type, Size, Quality, Etc.

A significant portion of the price is the pearl itself. It takes many months to create a freshwater pearl and then we hand-select them for the best quality/value. A larger pearl or more pearls will cost less than a smaller or fewer pearls because of lower quality (shape, luster, etc.) But we guarantee you'll be proud to wear any of our pearl jewelry :)

Materials

We generally always use 92.5% silver for all pendants, chains, clasps, etc. unless otherwise specified. Real silver adds a little more to the cost over silver plated or stainless steel, but we love the look of silver with pearls.

Logistics

We ship from China directly and of course need to pay for shipping, packaging, tariffs and all the other fun expenses. Many of which we had not considered before starting this business!
